Superb Hacker HUNTER VHF RP38A portable transistor radio from the 70's.SEE AND HEAR THIS RADIO PLAY ON YOUTUBE HERE(link to be posted)SEE THE HACKER HUNTER RP38A PAGE AT THE RADIO MUSEUMhttp://www.radiomuseum.org/r/hacker_hunter_rp38arp_38.html Amoung UK radio enthusiasts most seem to agree that in the portable market between 1960 and 1980 one maker stood head and shoulders above the rest. That maker was Hacker of Maidenhead in Berks, who in the brief 2 decades of thier existance consistently proiduced the finest portables ever made in the UK, and certainly amoung the best produced anywhere in the world.Hacker were never known much outside the UK, given they never exported, but through word of mouth in the vintage radio enthusiast community Hackers have started to come into the hands of radio connoisuers around the world, and the general reaction to the quality and performance of these remarkable radios puts then up with the worlds best.So the Hacker Hunter RP38A one of the must have sets for any serious transistor radio collector and particularly for the Hacker brand specific collector. It is also a great radio for anyone who needs a radio, and particularly appealing in preference to a modern new DAB set.It is what makers Hackers so collectable that makes them a valid choice even today. Put simply they no longer make radios like this, and never again will.Hacker particularly never skimped. The durable materials, high quality components, meticulous build quality, service freindly yet very stylish design. And most importantly the peerless sound quality.Hackers are quite simply classics. And some more than others. The HUNTER RP38A is certainly up there with the most celebrated Hacker models. The Hunter is widely credited by Hacker enthusiasts as the best sounding Hacker model. It is also one of the best looking and being slightly more compact than some larger models is also very convenient. It is arguably one of the last no compromise real high quality Hackers. The Hunter has LW/MW/VHF bands (that is AM/FM in the USA and elsewhere and separate bass and treble controls for optimim sound for different situations. The Hunter can run portably on 2 x PP9 batteries or via a mains/18v PSU (batteries/PSU (not supplied). For overseas buyers if PP9 batteries are not easily available locally I can supply 2 x Battery holders that can take 6 x AA batteries each providing the correct voltage and fitting into the spaces provided for the PP9 batteries. AA batteries are available worldwide and you can use rechargeable versions if you prefer. I can also advise on how best to obtain an external 18v power adapter to allow you to run this radio from your domestic power sockets. If you require AA battery adapters these will be an additional £10. I can supply a genuine used Hacker VP408 used power supply unit (for 220/240v) for an additional £35. Alternatively a new proprietary 18v PSU for 230v input for use in the UK and anywhere with 220/240v mains supply, for £20.The HUNTER went through several cosmetic changes, and this one is generally held to be the most desirable, from the mid phase of RP38A production with arguably the most attractive looks of all Hunter models, having the nice rounded one piece carry handle, and the bombproof horizontal bar aluminium grille.Pictures speak a thousand words! I have provided a wide range of clear photos to allow you to assess the external and interior condition, originality and completeness of this radio. I think the aerial is original. It is complete and extends and retracts fully and has an articulating base.I would hesitate to call any 40 year old used radio "mint", yet this example gets close, and over and above what you can see in the photos there is nothing I feel I should identify as a notable issue. Of course it is a used radio around 40 years old and it is bound to have a at least a few minor scuffs and marks. The tuning scale, grille, rexine covering and particularly the teak end caps which are in original finish look very good. The radio is in perfect working order. Tuning strongly on all bands and responding smoothly and well to all controls.I am pricing this radio in relation to its desirability and condition at £145 on a Buy It Now basis. WHY" BUY IT NOW" I generally list on a "BUY IT NOW" basis. I am not convinced that the Ebay auction is generally a good buying experience. You are mostly obliged to "watch" something you want to buy for up to 10 days. Then, to stand a chance of buying you often have to set a date to be at your computer to enter a last minute bidding lottery, usually at an inconvenient time. You end either dissapointed or concerned you have paid too much! Surely life is too short. If you see something you like, and are happy with the price you should be able to secure it immediately. No fuss. No problems. BEWARE EBAY BARGAINS The majority of vintage radios for sale on ebay are poorly listed. You have little chance of knowing exactly what you are buying from a single out of focus photo, and a brief description usually saying something like "untested as I dont have a battery". This will usually mean the bargain buy radio you end getting does not work and may be very cosmetically challenged and becomes an expensive mistake. It is possible that you will find examples of this radio apparently going a bit cheaper in some ebay auctions, but with this radio you know exactly what you are going to get. I have provided a comprehensive range of good clear photos, and a detailed accurate description. The radio will have been cleaned and fully checked before despatch. I offer a full refund in the event the radio does not match the description. The price of the radio is set at a level in relation to auction prices of similar radios in similar codition where possible. Vintage radios that work and that are in good condition offer tremendous value for money. They are collectible, useable, and enjoyable, may well hold or increase in value, and available at a fraction of the cost of a new radio. This vintage radio is just a lovely thing to have.
